Elvis Presley’s soundtrack albums are often considered inferior to his studio albums, but “Blue Hawaii” breaks that stereotype. Released in 1961 alongside the film in which Presley starred, this triple-platinum LP topped the Billboard album charts for almost five months. Mobile Fidelity’s reissue of the album captures the essence of the carefree early ’60s and the breezy Pacific Islands atmosphere, bringing Presley’s music to life with unparalleled clarity and presence.
“Blue Hawaii” showcases Presley’s incredible voice before he faced creative challenges, highlighting his warm crooning and versatility. Filled with verve, whimsy, romance, and earnestness, this record marked a significant point in his career.
The album features a variety of musical styles, from rock ‘n’ roll to ballads, rumba, luaus, and island-inspired tunes. Presley’s playful approach shines through in tracks like “Rock-A-Hula Baby,” “Hawaiian Wedding Song,” “Beach Boy Blues,” “Hawaiian Sunset,” and “Ku-U-I-Po.” “Blue Hawaii” may not be serious art, but it perfectly showcases Presley’s ability to entertain and adapt to different musical roles.
