Immanent Fire Emily Jane White’s sixth album, “Immanent Fire,” delves into the profound theme of our current era teetering on the edge of species annihilation. White skillfully navigates the listener through the emotions evoked by life on a planet facing imminent destruction. The album pays homage to the sacred, the earthly, and the feminine, all of which are under threat from the oppressive forces of patriarchy, colonialism, and capitalism. These systems conspire to exploit the natural world and its sacred beings, while subjugating women and individuals of diverse gender identities. White eloquently addresses the concept of the “war on immanence,” as articulated by feminist spiritual philosopher Starhawk, against the backdrop of the fires ravaging California.
Through her music, White invites introspection into the essence of existence in the capitalocene era, shedding light on prevalent issues such as anxiety, addiction, and depression. Amidst the turmoil, she presents a counter narrative centered on the reevaluation of the feminine, the vulnerable, and the emotional aspects of humanity. The album comprises ten tracks that weave a tapestry of melodies, with White’s voice serving as a beacon of hope amidst the tumultuous rhythms and harmonies. The fusion of electronic and acoustic elements, interspersed with sounds of nature, underscores the intrinsic connection between ecological well-being and ethical technological advancement.
